The Heart of Uptown Dallas

Legacy & History

A Storied Legacy

Designed by architect Frank J. Woerner, the property officially opened its doors on October 18, 1923, as The Stoneleigh Court Hotel. Originally envisioned as the tallest building west of the Mississippi—an ambition once deemed impossible—it debuted as a pioneering, large-scale apartment hotel project that instantly set the standard for upscale residential buildings in Dallas. Ultimately emerging as a Beaux-Arts masterpiece, it became the natural, undeniable gathering place for the city’s social elite.

The First Texas Penthouse

In 1934, former guest Colonel Harry E. Stewart fell in love with The Stoneleigh and purchased the property. Stewart added the first-ever penthouse in the state of Texas, importing 500-year-old Italian marble and English oak from London’s Charterhouse School to create a space fit for royalty.

A Masterclass in Maximalism

To redefine the hotel’s luxury, Stewart commissioned American design icon Dorothy Draper. She introduced a bold fantasy filled with vibrant color, dramatic pattern, and grand gestures, rejecting convention. Her unapologetic vision cemented The Stoneleigh as a setting rich with creative energy.
